4 Things to Make Your Wedding Uniquely KC

1. Focus on the fountains
Would you believe that the fist fountains in Kansas City were made for horses, dogs, and birds? It’s true! They were, after all, made for the practical purpose of getting a drink when needed. Kansas City is second on the list for the “city with the most fountains”, shown up only by Rome, Italy (not too shabby) and some of our fountains are over 300 years old!

How do you tie these fabulous fountains into your special day? Take your bridal party for a little trip downtown and have a photo session by a few of them. Or, scout out the perfect location (and get permission) to have your cocktail hour surrounding one. And, if you can get ahold of the right people, you might be able to trash the dress” or have a photo session with your new hubby IN a fountain.

If you ask a non-native of Kansas City what they remember most about Kansas City, they seem to always respond with “The Plaza”. And I don’t mean to brag, but we do have The Plaza. It’s technical name may be the Country Club Plaza, but to most people it’s just The Plaza. That’s pretty awesome. So why not have some fun with your guests and wedding party there over the course of your wedding planning and wedding weekend?
Have your rehearsal dinner at some great places like Buca di Beppo or The Melting Pot, both which encourage a warm, friendly atmosphere. There’s nothing that says you can’t register for some goodies on the plaza, either! Check out Restoration Hardware for lots of great furniture and decorating tidbits, Williams-Sonoma for kitchen gadgets, or Scandia Down for some great bedroom buys. Perhaps you would like to thank your attendants with a little somethin’ somethin’ from the Apple Store. Or maybe you’d like to get some pampering products for your maids or some nice ties and cufflinks for your groomsmen from The Body Shop or Mark Shale, respectively. You can find something for just about everyone on the Plaza!

Kansas City is simply known for it’s great bar-b-q. There is no denying it! Embrace this by serving some at your rehearsal dinner or reception. Or, try some of the great BBQ places around town with your wedding party or family, like Smokehouse, Gates, Zarda’s, Arthur Bryant’s, Winslow’s, and Jack Stack. Yum! Just be extra careful if you’re dining in your white wedding dress! It can be messy stuff!

Kansas City also has a great history of Jazz, and in my humble opinion, jazz lends itself nicely to wedding reception music. If you plan on having a classy event and wish to have a romantic yet fun atmosphere, jazz is the way to go as far is music is concerned. And! The great thing is you don’t need a 12 piece band to get that jazzy vibe! Try a pianist during cocktail hour and as your guests enter the reception, add a great singer for your first dance, and then a saxophonist for your other special dances. If you want to dance the night away, just plug in your iPod into the sound system or hire a DJ for the last few hours.

What great ideas! I have seen more and more KC brides catching on to the BBQ tradition, and it’s always a crowd favorite! The jazz idea is great, especially with the revitalization of the jazz district downtown. Keep up the great suggestions!
